Description
Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) is a highly reactive, colorless, and odorless acid with the CAS Number 7664-93-9. It is extensively used across various industries, including chemical manufacturing, where it is vital for producing fertilizers, detergents, and batteries. In laboratories, sulfuric acid is essential for titrations and acid-base extractions. It also plays a critical role in neutralizing alkaline waste and treating acidic effluent.
Manufacturing Process
Sulfuric acid is primarily produced through the contact process. This involves oxidizing sulfur dioxide (SO₂) to sulfur trioxide (SO₃) using a catalyst. The sulfur trioxide is absorbed into concentrated sulfuric acid to form oleum, which is then diluted with water to achieve the desired sulfuric acid concentration.
